Why your neck curve matters

Nowadays life moves so fast and for many people, in a typical day they tend to be connected to digital hand held devices, or sitting in a car, or sitting at a desk for more than 8 hours per day on average. All of these activities tend to have the same sort of impact on our neck. They tend to straighten out the normal neck curvature.

A normal neck curve looks a little like this.

Normal Neck Lordosis from the side view

Notice that the neck is shaped like the letter “C”. There is a very good reason why that is normal and why a straightened neck is abnormal.

Let’s look at there logical benefits of a correct neck curve.

  • The weight of our head is approximately 4.5-5kg
  • Gravity acts 24/7 in a downward direction.
  • The 7 neck vertebrae are all joined to each other through delicate and pain sensitive joints
  • A neck with a ‘C” curve can carry the gravitational load of the head most effectively because the “C” shape acts like a spring thus protecting the delicate joints.

Sadly what is NORMAL and what is COMMON are usually not the same. A most common neck shape that I see in my office is like this.

Loss of Lordosis. Curve reversed.

So the difference most obviously is that we don’t see the normal “C” and we also see the position of the head is further forward over shoulders. If our neck is shaped more like this our head ‘effectively’ weighs more and over time we are much more likely to have premature neck arthritic changes and other possible symptoms.
